Why is it important for charters to have multiple authorizers?

Authorizers play many important roles in charter schooling. They include establishing application requirements, renewal procedures, monitoring performance and providing general leadership and collaboration support for the educational program and staff. Charter schools should have the ability to partner with an authorizer they align well with to ensure high-quality operations. Giving a school district or other entity sole power over approving a charter contract can end up limiting families’ access to quality alternatives.
